Bamberg sits on the edge of one of Franconia’s favourite holiday destinations, the picturesque landscape of the ‘Franconian Switzerland’ with its wooded hills and rivers offering all manner of water- and other sports: angling, swimming, trekking, cycling, golf, riding, potholing, tennis, spas, climbing, canoeing, flying… and of course eating and drinking!

Famous Franconian place: Tüchersfeld

Not far from Bamberg are several of Germany’s outstanding historical monuments: Baroque Seehof Palace, the former hunting lodge and summer residence of the Prince-Bishops; Weißenstein Palace, another masterpiece owed to the great Baroque architect Dientzenhofer; and three monuments of Baroque sacred architecture, Ebrach Monastery, Banz Monastery and the great pilgrimage church of Vierzehnheiligen, whose exuberant decoration takes you back to a time when the greatest talents in art were placed at the service of God.

And, of course, within easy reach are the historic cities of Nuremberg (site of the most convenient local airport), Bayreuth (where Richard Wagner’s own Festival Theatre still presents his operas every summer in the setting he dreamed of all his life) and, a little further away, Würzburg (capital of Franconia and spiritual home of our famous Steinwein).
