Born in 1992 in London, Alexander Prior attended the Royal College of Music, later moving to the St. Petersburg Conservatoire, where he has been studying conducting and composition since 2006.
Alexander Prior has frequently promoted his own works as conductor: aged 14, he premiered his Symphony No.1 with the St. Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra, and in 2008 he conducted the premiere of his ballet Mowgli in Moscow. Most recently he unveiled his Choral Symphony on Gogol’s novella Nevsky Prospekt in St. Petersburg. As winner of the 2nd prize in the 2009 Leeds Conductors Competition, he conducted the Orchestra of Opera North during the final. In 2009 he performed his concerto ‘Velesslavitsa’ with the Northern Sinfonia, and will soon return to direct the orchestra again.
In January, Alexander Prior will take up the post of Assistant to Guest Conductors (Chairman’s Fellow) at the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, and in April he will fulfil an invitation to conduct the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition, this year he is Conducting Fellow at the Tanglewood Music Centre.
