The Choir was founded in 1983 by Rolf Beck who has been its director since then. Its repertoire spans both the secular and sacred a capella literature and the great choral-orchestral works of the Classical, Romantic and modern eras. A recent focuses of the choir’s work have been performances and radio / CD recordings of Mahler’s Symphonies Nos. 2, 3 and 8.
Through numerous concerts, radio broadcasts, CDs and television appearances, the Choir has won a high reputation in Bamberg, Germany, and throughout the musical world. Its concert activity takes it to Germany’s musical capitals as well as to Europe’s leading festivals, including the Lucerne and Salzburg Festivals, the Linz Brucknerfest and Prague Spring. Choir members have toured Israel, Japan and South America. The Choir has collaborated with many maestros including the Principal Conductor Jonathan Nott, his predecessor Horst Stein, the Bamberg Symphony’s Honorary Conductor Herbert Blomstedt, Robin Ticciati and its own founder and director Rolf Beck.
In the past members have sung under, among others, Gerd Albrecht, Adam Fischer, Claus Peter Flor, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Michael Gielen, Hartmut Haenchen, Leopold Hager, Richard Hickox, Manfred Honeck, Gustav Kuhn, Emmanuel Krivine, Ferdinand Leitner, Ingo Metzmacher, Giuseppe Patané, Georges Prêtre, Karl Anton Rickenbacher, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Carl St. Clair, Marcello Viotti, Walter Weller and Hans Zender.
Membership of the Bamberg Symphony Choir is conditional upon an audition, in which vocal and general musical abilities are tested. Choir members initially prepare works privately and then meet for rehearsal weekends on specific projects.
