Fellow music-lovers!

On these pages you will find details of an exciting and varied season. Over the coming year, as well as appearing in Bamberg and the wider region, the Bamberg Symphony will again be present at leading international musical venues: the Orchestra plays twice in Vienna’s Konzerthaus, continues its series of visits to Baden-Baden’s Festspielhaus and once more takes up the invitation to tour South America.

The programme

The season’s programmes follow two main themes: one series presents several of music’s greatest ‘late’ masterpieces, while the other focuses on Russian repertoire and modern classics. We continue our exploration of Haydn’s musical world; and, of course, the performance of Gustav Mahler’s music, a recurrent theme in the Bamberg Symphony’s recent activities, is almost a duty for the Bavarian State Philharmonic in these Mahler years, 2010 and 2011.

Bienale Bamberg

For this reason I especially recommend to you the first Bamberg Biennale, an extremely varied series of events centred around the subject of ‘Late Mahler’, which takes place in July 2010. We trust that the slight revisions to the brochure’s layout have highlighted the season’s main programming themes more clearly than before, while also giving as full a view as possible of its detailed content.

Chief Guest Conductor: Robin Ticciati

We’re delighted that, starting this season, alongside our Chief Conductor Jonathan Nott and Honorary Conductor Herbert Blomstedt, Robin Ticciati will assume the post of Chief Guest Conductor. This marks a deepening of the five-year long artistic partnership we have enjoyed with this outstanding representative of music’s new generation. Together these artists form an triumvirate unparalleled in today’s orchestral scene, one we count ourselves very fortunate to be associated with.

I would like to thank all our political partners, whose support guarantees the Orchestra the right conditions in which to thrive. And I must thank you, our esteemed audience, for your interest and especially for your commitment and loyalty to us. The keen enthusiasm of the Bamberg public is a crucial part of the Orchestra’s great reputation!

We look forward to seeing you at the concerts!

Yours sincerely,
