For the State of Bavaria, the Bamberg Symphony – Bavarian State Philharmonic is both a cultural figurehead and a source of great pride. As an elite orchestra it enjoys the highest national and global status and appears as Bavaria’s cultural ambassador in the world’s greatest concert halls.
The Bamberg Symphony’s outstanding performances of the works of Gustav Mahler repeatedly bring it special acclaim. Recently the Orchestra won the MIDEM Classical Award 2010 with its recording of Mahler’s Symphony No.9, for which I extend my warmest congratulations to the Orchestra’s members and Chief Conductor, Jonathan Nott!
Gustav Mahler also gives his name to the world-class Conducting Competition which the Bamberg Symphony recently held for the third time, to resounding success. The candidates completely won over the Competition’s global audience of music professionals. The winner, Ainārs Rubiķis, will appear as guest at the helm of the Bamberg Symphony during the coming season. The Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition has again proved the perfect springboard for the top talents of a new generation of artists.
The Orchestra is also winning a new generation of young fans, thanks to the success of its work with children and young people. To get our boys and girls switched on to music the Bamberg Symphony regularly visits schools and this season will for the first time include children’s concerts in the subscription series. Before each concert, specially devised introductions will get the young listeners fired up about the music and the composers.
To the ladies and gentlemen of the Orchestra and to its management, I wish every success this season, and to the public, many unforgettable musical experiences!
