As ‘Bavaria’s Cultural Ambassador to the World’, the Bamberg Symphony – Bavarian State Philharmonic is a welcome guest in the great concert halls of Germany and the whole world. Alongside concerts in its home city of Bamberg, tours and guest appearances have always been at the heart of the Orchestra’s artistic mission. In the last few years the Bavarian State Philharmonic has become a fixture of Spain’s concert life. The 2012/2013 season will see it return twice to the Iberian peninsula, starting in San Sebastián, whose Quincena Musical is one of Europe’s most distinctive Festivals: the Basque city’s choir, the Orfeón Donostiarra, whose reputation extends far beyond the country’s borders, will join the Bamberg Symphony for Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms. The programme also includes works by Ives, Schubert, Brahms, Debussy and Mahler. That will be followed in Spring 2013 by appearances in Barcelona, Castellón, Madrid and Alicante, when the Bambergers and their Chief Conductor will perform music by Schubert, Mozart and, once again, Mahler.
‘I immediately bonded with the viola’, says Tabea Zimmermann, remembering her first steps in music. She has been a welcome guest in Bamberg since 1988, and more than almost any other artist she has thrust the viola into the limelight of concert life: in her hands, it is both a charismatic, highly expressive solo instrument, and a versatile, characterful ‘voice’ in chamber music. All these facets will be on show while Tabea Zimmermann is Artist in Residence in Bamberg.
