Bamberg Symphony is "Rising star of the year 2013"

The German magazine "Cicero" counts the Bamberg Symphony among the "Rising stars of the year 2013". In its January issue the jury says: "Under the baton of the British Principal Conductor Jonathan Nott the Bamberg Symphony has become one of the German top orchestras. In their recently completed recording of all symphonies by Gustav Mahler they show a ground-breaking, deromanticized portrait of the Austrian composer."

Rising stars of 2013 are also, among others, the Austrian pianist and designated director of Salzburg Festival Markus Hinterhäuser, the Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov, the German actor Daniel Brühlo and the author Terézia Mora.

Successful concerts in Beijing

The Bamberg Symphony played the official New Year's Eve concert in Beijing

At the rehearsal in the Great Hall of the People

Acclaimed by the enthusiastic audience, the Bamberg Symphony played the official New Year's concert in Beijing that was broadcast on TV. In the Great Hall of the Poeple the programme comprised works by Richard Wagner, Peter Tchaikovsky and Antonín Dvořáks symphony »From the New World«. The German newspaper »Die Welt« wrote about the concert: »The 6,000 listeners in the hall were wildly enthusiastic, especially after the 9th symphony by Antonín Dvořák.« The critic praised »the artistic attitude which the 51-year-old British conductor and his 'Bambergers' have been working on since the beginning of their cooperation in 2000. Instead of preserving traditions and habits, Nott and the orchestra represent evolution and open-mindedness.« Another newspaper wrote: »Instead of exploiting climaxes and overwhelming the audience with emotionalism, Nott and the Bambergers have uncovered colours and structures with utmost accuracy. The audience's reaction was astonishing: The over 6,000 listeners seemed amazed by a rendering they had obviously never experienced before.«

After concert tours in 2007 and 2010 with Jonathan Nott and in 1986 with Horst Stein this has been the orchestra's fourth journey to China.

Bamberg Symphony Orchestra's Mahler Cycle Completed

Recordings of symphonies 6 and 8 released

The Bamberg Symphony Orchestra and Principal Conductor Jonathan Nott have recently finished a project that they've been working on for almost ten years: The recording of all completed symphonies of Gustav Mahler (listen now). By publishing symphonies No. 6 and No. 8 in September 2013, the cycle is finally completed. Some of the recordings have been awarded international prizes as the MIDEM Classical Award. All recordings of the cycle have been published by the label TUDOR, a partner of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra for many years now that has already published almost 50 CDs of the orchestra, and in cooperation with the Bayerischer Rundfunk, partner of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra since the 1950s. Address of the Principal Conductor to the 2013/2014 season

Wolfgang Fink copyright Keith Saunders

‘What are we on this earth for?’ A simple question, but very difficult to answer. One thing I do feel, often, is that music reflects mankind. When that happens, sounds become symbols for experiences which show us the meaning of our existence. But it isn’t only we musicians who have such moments. It is our public that makes us who we are. That’s why we feel it our special duty to give audiences only our best.
