He is one of today’s most sought-after pianists the world over, appearing in music’s top international centres: and this season Pierre-Laurent Aimard is Artist in Residence with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra / Bavarian State Philharmonic.
The star French pianist is a key figure in the world of new music – which has not prevented him from launching high-profile explorations of traditional repertoire, always searching for new interpretative problems and solutions which transcend historical boundaries. His recording of Bach’s legendary Art of Fugue, recently released, is one of many which have caused a sensation.
Pierre-Laurent Aimard first performed in Bamberg in November 2002; then, in 2005, he joined the Bambergers and their Chief Conductor Jonathan Nott on a tour of the USA, including a concert at New York’s Lincoln Center, and in 2006 he appeared with the Orchestra in Luxemburg, France, Belgium and Austria.
This season, Aimard will perform as Artist in Residence not just in Bamberg itself but on the Orchestra’s international tours, with further appearances in Luxemburg, Brussels, Vienna and New York.
Pierre-Laurent Aimard was born in Lyon and in 1973 he won the prestigious Messiaen Competition in Paris. Then, aged just 19, he became the first pianist of Pierre Boulez’s newly founded Ensemble InterContemporain, since when he has collaborated with the world’s best-known orchestras and conductors as well as with leading contemporary composers.
He has run several international concert series, he teaches at the Paris Conservatoire and the Musikhochschule in Cologne and he has given lectures and master-classes all over the world. Many of his CDs have won awards, including the Echo-Klassik-Preis and a coveted Grammy.
